Firstly — congratulations!

Getting engaged is such an exciting time, and it can feel like there are suddenly a lot of decisions to make. Your wedding cake might not be the very first thing on your list, but it is an important part of your day — both visually and as part of your celebration.

If you’ve just started planning, here are a few helpful things to think about when it comes to your wedding cake.

1. Consider your wedding style and venue

Your wedding cake should feel like a natural extension of your overall wedding style. Think about your venue, colour palette, flowers, design, stationery and the atmosphere you’re creating.

Whether you’re getting married in a grand manor house, a countryside barn, or a more intimate setting, your cake can be designed to complement the surroundings beautifully rather than compete with them.

2. Think about guest numbers

One of the first practical things to consider is how many guests you are inviting. This will help determine the size of your cake, the number of tiers, and whether you may need additional cutting cakes.

I can always guide you through portion sizes to make sure you have just the right amount for your day.

3. Gather inspiration — but don’t worry about having a final idea

Many couples come to me with a Pinterest board full of ideas, and that’s absolutely fine! You don’t need a fully formed design at this stage.

It’s helpful to think about:

  • Colours you’re drawn to
  • Flowers you love
  • Textures or finishes you like (smooth, rustic, hand-painted, etc.)
  • Any personal touches you’d like included

From there, I can take your ideas and create something completely bespoke to your wedding.

4. Consider the season

Seasonality can influence both the design and flavour of your cake. For example:

  • Spring weddings often suit soft florals and lighter flavours
  • Summer weddings can include fresh fruit and brighter designs
  • Autumn weddings work beautifully with warm tones and rich textures
  • Winter weddings lend themselves to elegant, classic finishes and deeper flavours

5. Book your cake maker early

Wedding cake designers often book up well in advance — especially for peak wedding months. Once you have your date and venue secured, it’s a good idea to enquire early to avoid disappointment.

At this stage, many couples secure their date and then return to finalise design details closer to the wedding, which is completely fine.

6. Enjoy the process

Your wedding cake should be an enjoyable part of your planning, not a stressful one. My role is to guide you through the process, help you refine your ideas, and create something that feels personal to you as a couple.

From initial enquiry through to delivery on the day, everything is taken care of so you can simply enjoy seeing it come to life.
